Chemical composition and biological activity of essential oils from lamiaceas, asteraceas, vervenaceas: a review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Since ancient times, both plants and essential oils extracted from them have had an important role in the therapy field because of their biological properties, such as larvicide, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and fungicide action, among others. It has been proved that essential oils have biological activity, which is extremely important in fields like science and industry. Therefore, in the last decades the importance of studying and developing new techniques for analysis, that would allow us to identify the chemical composition of essential oils, has taken a significantly priority. This is because essential oils have become a potential alternative to synthetic compounds due to high resistance to pathogenic microorganisms developed by the last ones. In this review it is analyzed the chemical composition of essential oils of some species that belong to families: Lamiaceas, Asteraceas and Vervenaceas and its relationship with its biological activity. It is concluded that the antimicrobial activity of essential oils depends on their chemical composition and the quantity of the individual components.
